The concept behind DEADVVOOD is an attempt to capture the essence of one stage of nature; decay. The paintings are intentionally framed with a limited view, correlating to our limited scope of understanding our existence and the world in which we exist. Much of the inspiration comes from the alpine wilderness in Northern California, mainly the trees therein. The paintings are representative of the simple yet complex structure of trees. The textures of the bark and chaotically organic paths of growth evoke reflection on the mystery and beauty of the natural world which we are subject to. These once living, thriving organisms now dead, take on a new life though us as viewers while they remain standing like some ancient obelisks from a time long before ours. We can relate to trees in that we also start as young, budding saplings and grow to our our full potential, taking on character along the way. We develop knots and unique cracks in our bark through time and experiences both good and bad. When we pass, our pith remains in the things we created and those who keep our memory. We exist in old relics of ourselves; totems that exemplify what we were. Subsequently, we become something completely different than before, like DEADVVOOD. Like paintings of trees on wood panels that were once trees.

The DEADVVOOD series is Black Acrylic with off-white tinted Gesso on MDF Board. Each Board is custom cut to size and hand made.

‘When I look at a forest, I see the cycle of life giving me a full frontal, unashamed. I see my birth, my current state and am forced to face my impending doom. It reminds me; the forest isn’t afraid, why should I be?’
